Continual Professional Development for Counsellors and Therapists

Training for Therapists provides a range of post qualifying counselling courses for therapists and counsellors along with a range of workshops and events for qualified practitioners and those in training. We offer a Level 5 Equivalent course we call Expanding Therapeutic Practice and a Level 6 equivalent supervision course. Both are aligned with BACP competencies. Courses and workshops are held in person at Hemerdon near Plymouth and online via Zoom.

The events are facilitated by Mark Hartshorn and Jo Schroeder who between them have over twenty five years experience of delivering training and working in the counselling profession. They have both been lead trainers at Devon and Cornwall Counselling Hub, now known as Astranti Connect.

Expanding Therapeutic Practice

(Level 5 Equivalent)

Have you completed, or in the process of completing a level 4 Diploma course and wondering what your next step might be?

Then our Expanding Therapeutic Practice(Level 5 equivalent course) might be just what you are looking for.

This training will help you to expand your practice by taking the next step as a counsellor, whether that be setting up in private practice or taking a more senior role in a counselling agency.

The training will look at how to deepen practice to work with the trauma that clients bring to our work with them by looking at attachment disorders, maladaptive schemas, how to work with trauma and using the therapeutic relationship as a vehicle for healing. You will be introduced to The Connections Model which informs an integrative and holistic way of working with clients and what they bring.

Counselling Supervision

(Level 6 Equivalent)

This supervision training is suitable for those who wish to offer supervision to counsellors, although it will also equip anyone working in the helping professions to support others in their work. The training takes a cross modal approach to supervision, meaning we will cover both developmental and process models of supervision and invite you to bring your own theoretical approach to the training.

We will draw on the work of Hawkins and Shohet and their Seven Eyed Process Model as well as looking at Stoltenberg and Delworth’s developmental model of supervision.

There will be time spent looking at what supervision actually is, the ethics of supervision and draw on the work of Kohut to explore the supervisory relationship. There will be an opportunity to look at what makes supervision effective, the responsibilities that come with being a supervisor and plenty of supervision time to explore our practice as supervisors.

Starting and Developing a Private Practice

This classroom based workshop will provide the opportunity for you to discover what is involved in setting up, and maintaining, private practice. Throughout the day, in small groups and in the large group, we will look at:-

The difference between ethical and legal responsibilities by dispelling some common myths about private practice.
What to charge, exploring the costs involved in running a private practice and how to make it pay.
Assessing and documenting risk and justifying decisions ethically.

Aligning your private practice with your passion to ensure your work is rewarding.

Working with the Soul in Counselling

How comfortable do you feel to explore soul and spirit with your clients?
Could your clients depression or anxiety be caused by a loss of soul?
Does the soul communicate through our symptoms?

Mark Hartshorn will explore these questions and more with participants of this one day workshop. There will be a chance to discuss and explore your own relationship to soul and to discover the language of soul and how to work with this with clients and yourself. Drawing on transpersonal concepts and Mark's vast experience of working with spiritual matters, this workshop will provide an opportunity to reflect on your practice and consider how soul work might be integrated into your practice, to work with a range of presenting issues. Suitable for Hub students studying the level 4 model and practitioners interested in incorporating soul work into their practice.

Understanding and Working with Narcissism

This workshop is facilitated by Jo Schroeder and will introduce you to the topic of narcissism and dispel some of the myths around what it is and how it may emerge in the therapeutic relationship. Participants will learn what narcissistic needs are and consider their own experiences and responses to their own and those of others.

The day will explore the link between narcissism and grief and consider how we work with the two sides of the narcissistic coin.

Are You Sitting Comfortably?

A study by professor Albert Mehrabian and Susan R. Ferris shaped the way we have come to understand the importance of non-verbal communication. Their study explained that body language is vital in terms of understanding an underlying emotional message.

Since then many have gone on to explore the impact of trauma on the body and people like Bessel van der Kolk have done a great deal of work to help therapists understand the impact of trauma on our client’s bodies. Surely then, we as therapists must include the body in the work we do with our clients.
This workshop provides a space for the stories of bodies to be heard.

This workshop:

Offers experiential exercises and techniques to develop awareness of a client’s trauma and its impact on them (as experienced by body)
Explores how a therapeutic space can be created in which bodies may feel safe to tell their stories
Provides opportunities for the inter-connectedness of bodies to be brought into awareness and worked with
Presents some of the ways in which the body attempts to have its story heard
